The Department of History, Design and Restoration of Architecture (DSDRA) was established on 1 July 2010 as the merger of two pre-existing Departments, that of History of Architecture, Restoration and Conservation of Architectural Heritage and that of Surveying, Analysis and Design of the Environment and Architecture, which were all merged into the new Department as part of the reorganisation of the Sapienza University of Rome.

The research objectives of the Department are linked to the activities of the two constituent Departments and focus on the following sectors: History of Architecture, from the study of theories and historiographical methods to the study of individual historical buildings, cities, minor centres and the landscape; Drawing, from the methods and history of representation to the most recent techniques of representation and survey of architecture and the territory, to graphics and design; Restoration, from the theories and methods of conservation intervention to the design of conservation and restoration interventions, from surface consolidations to structural consolidations.
